208 | 1895 'THE DEATH OF MRS. WALTER PADBURY. THE DEATH OF MRS. WALTER PADBURY. The name of Mr. Walter Padbury will remain long identified with Western Australia as one of the first and foremost settlers who have assisted in the heavy work of colonisation, and whose sturdy energy and unflinching integrity has won him a prominent place in the esteem not only of the old residents of the colony but also of the newcomers who have heard his history. Much as Mr. Padbury is respected, his late wife was as dearly esteemed, and many have a grateful recollection of little acts of kindness, which in times of trouble and distress have cheered many a heart and gladdened many a home. Mrs. Padbury terminated a life of untiring usefulness last Friday evening. About four months ago the deceased lady was attacked by influenza and then cancer supervened, to which she eventually succumbed at the ripe old age of sixty-nine. Mrs. Padbury was born in England on the 14th February, 1826, and with her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. William Nairn, and three brothers and sisters, arrived in the colony by the ship Marquis of Anglesey in August, 1829. Mrs. Padbury, or to call her by her maiden name, Charlotte Nairn, was, therefore, three years of age when she arrived in Western Australia, and may be said to have grown up with the colony. In fact, she saw the development of the country, and many still remember the great assistance she was able to render, first to her father and then to her husband, in the work which lay before them. Her brothers are also well known throughout the colony. One of them, William, was associated with Mr. Padbury in opening up the north, and he lost his life in this enterprise, having been drowned by the foundering of the ship Emma on her voyage between Cossack and Fremantle in the year 1866, when about forty others went down in the ill fated vessel. Of the remaining members of her family Mr. James Nairn lives still at Dongarra, and Mr. Wallace Nairn is a resident of South Australia. Her sisters were Mrs. Grigson, Mrs. Roche, Mrs. Ogden, and Mrs. Meares. Miss Charlotte Nairn, who was the second daughter, married Mr. Padbury in April, 1844, and celebrated the jubilee of her wedding last April. There were no children, and Mrs. Padbury'a motherly heart led her to take a keen and active interest in all work of charity for the benefit of her sex, whilst her private charities were numerous and secret, as her kindly nature appreciated the scriptural in junction to conceal from the left hand what the right hand giveth. She was one of the earliest members of the House of Mercy, and was a foundation member of the Dorcas Society, being also upon the committee of both institutions. On the death of Mrs. Maycock about a year ago, Mrs. Padbury accepted the post of honorary matron, but unfortunately by reason of advancing old age and subsequent ill health, was unable to take more than a nominal part in the duties of the position. As has been said, Mrs. Padbury became ill about four months ago, and although she had the best medical skill obtainable, in addition to tender care and assiduous nursing, her malady was fatal, and she breathed her last on Friday evening. The Funeral took place yesterday, the remains being conveyed to the Anglican cemetery, followed by a large number of relatives and friends. The coffin was of polished jarrah, with bold brass ornaments, from the establishment of Mr. D. J. Chipper, who had charge of the funeral arrangements. The wreaths which were sent were numerous and beautiful. The service was performed by the Rev. Mr. Orchard. The chief mourners were Mr. Walter Padbury, Mr. W. T. Loton (M.L.A.), Mr. Roberts (of Yatheroo), Mr. C. Davidson (of Glentromie), Mr. Wm. Padbury, Mr. Hardwick, Mr. Frank James, and Mr. J. Drummond; whilst the pall-bearers were Mr. G. Glyde (senr.), Mr. G. Randell, M.L.A., Mr. Henry Strickland (senr.), and Mr. William Strickland (senr). The cortège moved from Mr. Padbury's residence, St. George's terrace, at four o'clock yesterday afternoon, and proceeding slowly towards the cemetery was joined by many of the leading residents of the colony, who were desirous of showing respect to the memory of the deceased lady, who had not only been a true help and mate to her husband, but a staunch friend to many whose sorrowful duty it now was to follow her remains to their last resting place. | Nairn, Charlotte (I1201)

217 | 1939 'MRS. JAMES DRUMMOND MRS. JAMES DRUMMOND. Eighty one Yesterday. By F.W.G. ON Wednesday last the members of the Dandaragan Road Board assembled at Dalguring, the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Drummond, of Yere-Yere, to present to Mr. Drummond an address of appreciation of his services as a member of the board for a period of 50 years. Yesterday there were many congratulations to Mrs. Drummond on the attainment of her 81st birthday. She was born on December 13, 1858, in a cottage on the south side of St. George's-terrace, between King and Mill streets. She came to Yere-Yere in 1876 as a school-teacher and has remained there ever since. In 1880 she married Mr. James Drummond, her maiden name being Ellen Amelia Ougden. Her maternal grandfather, William Nairn, arrived at the Swan River in 1829 on the third boat to reach here that year. His name appears in the records as having taken up land in Perth on November 28, 1829. By his wife Ann (who, before her marriage, was Ann Rawlingson) he had a numerous family of sons and daughters whose names figure prominently in the State's history. One of these was James Nairn, the father of Mrs. Edward Roberts, of Yathroo. Another was Charles Nairn, who accompanied Frank Gregory on his explorations and was manager for Walter Padbury at Yathroo and the De Grey. Charlotte Nairn, a daughter of William, became Mrs. Walter Padbury. Another daughter, Emma, married James John Ougden, and it is their child who is 81 today. Yere-Yere, as a homestead, became famous through the years. It was there that the first church services were held in the district of Dandaragan. The solid stone structure which was erected as a church and school in Dandaragan, was named St. Ann's after Mrs. Drummond's grandmother, Ann Nairn. Mrs. Drummond filled the office of church organist from 1885-1935, which is probably a record for Western Australia. For many years she conducted Sunday school. Through those years she was also in demand at concerts and dances. Her memories of Perth are clear. For some years she lived with her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Padbury, at their home on the corner of King-street and St. George's terrace, where Padbury House now stands. | Ougden, Ellen Amelia (I1207)

222 | 1939 'SERVICE TO THE P.P.A SERVICE TO THE P.P.A. Mr. Warren Marwick Honoured. YORK, July 10. Recognition of the valuable services rendered to the Primary Producers' Association by Mr. Warren Marwick was made when he received a life membership certificate at a general meeting of the York branch of the association on July 8. The branch had moved that this honour be conferred on him and the last conference of the association agreed to the proposal. The president of the branch (Mr. W. H. Robinson) asked Mr. W. G. Burges, past president of the branch, to make the presntation. In doing so, Mr. Burges referred to Mr. Marwick's long and active connection with the movement, Mr. Marwick having been a member since its inception. During that period, Mr. Burges said, Mr. Marwick had been a loyal friend to the farmer and thoroughly deserved the honour. All hoped that he would be spared to continue to assist the organi sation for many years. Mr. Marwick. in acknowledging the honour, said he greatly appreciated what had been done. He was pleased that the mover in connection with it had been Mr. R. M. Leake, of Kellerberrin, who, with him, had been responsible for the birth of the farmer's movement-the old Far mers and Settlers' Association--in this State. This action had been taken in order that farmers would be sufficiently organised to combat a threatened rural workers' log. Endeavours must be continued to induce all primary producers to join the association. He was pleased that the presentation had been made by Mr. Burges, who had been very helpful to the association over many years. Mr. Marwick expressed a hope that he would be able to continue to assist the movement. He was pleased that the hon our had been confered on him at the in stance of the local branch, which he wished every success. | Marwick, Warren (I778)

233 | 1947 'EARLY BUSSELTON EARLY BUSSELTON Associations Of Keyser Family BUSSELTON, Dec. 26. Mr. Herbert Keyser, who was born at Busselton 80 years ago and left 73 years ago with his parents to live at Albany, is renewing acquaintance here with relatives among several of the old families. His mother, who prior to her marriage , was Catherine Thurkle, was born in Perth near the site of the Causeway. Her father was a foreman for the then Perth Town Trust. His father, Charles Keyser, came from Philadelphia. They were married at Busselton the ceremony being performed by the magistrate (Col. John Molloy), who came to the State in 1829 at the same time as the Bussell family. Following the trade of builder, Mr. Keyser erected the timber mill at Quindalup owned by the late Mr. Harry Yelverton, about 90 years ago. In 1873 or 1874 he built the light house on the Busselton beachfront, the last traces of which were removed earlier this year. Another interesting association of the family with the early history of this district was the fact that they went to Albany on the Georgette which was wrecked a few monhs later off the mouth of the Margaret River and brought fame to Grace Bussell for her part in rescuing the passengers. Altogether there were 14 children in the family, seven of whom are still living and aggregate in ages 544 years. The five oldest members of the family were born at Busselton and the other two at Albany. They are Mrs. Alice Dunn. 93 years. of Albany; Mrs. Amy Baudity, 85. 243 | 1942 'THE LATE MRS ROBERTS THE LATE MRS ROBERTS. The death of Mrs Charlotte Ro berts, the widow of the late Mr Edward Roberts, of Yathroo, Dandarragan, which took place in Perth on Wednesday, removes another link with the early pioneers of this State. Mrs Roberts was the second daughter of Mr and Mrs James Nairn, of Cooroo, who were among the earliest pioneers, arriving in Western Australia in 1829. She was married in Guildford when she was 17 and went to live at Yathroo where she spent most of her married life. Her husband predeceased her about 25 years ago. They had eight children, four sons and four daughters, all but two of whom are living, 28 grand children, and 17 great grandchild ren, nine of whom are serving with the various services. Mrs Roberts was in her 92nd year. She was much loved and respected in the Dandarragan district, her sympathetic kindly personality endearing her to all with whom she came in contact. She was ever ready to help neighbours in time of sickness or difficulties. She and her husband kept open house, and the hospitality of their home was known far and wide. Mrs Roberts was a splendid mother and a great homemaker. Her home came first with her always and her family was devoted to her. She too had great courage, and Dire so many pioneer women met the difficulties of early day life very bravely. She used to tell stories of early travelling in buggies, and later she and her husband were the first people of the district to have a motor car. Mrs Roberts was very good to the natives in the district, looking after them when they were sick and helping them in many ways. After Mr Roberts retired they lived at Kayanaba. Later she came to live in Perth and for the last 10 years had resided with one of her daughters, Mrs Lucy Hennessey, at South Perth. She was wonderful for her years and well and active until comparatively recently. Her funeral took place yesterday at Dandarragan where she was laid to rest with her husband in the district in which they had lived so happily for so many years. | Nairn, Charlotte (I1208)
