455 | 1950 'DEAF WOMAN IN FIRE DRAMA A deaf, 54 year old woman crashed 20ft. from a balcony while trying to escape in her nightgown from a hotel fire early to day. Terrified by dense smoke pouring from the blazing office of the Nedlands Park Hotel, she fell on to bitumen and broke her left ankle. Her husband and sister screamed out to her as she tried to climb down a post to safety, but she could not hear them. The injured woman, now in a private hospital is Mrs. Frank A. Leeds, wife of the Port Hedland Road Board secretary. They were holidaying in Perth and were to return by aircraft on Saturday. The fire, fought by popular licensee Steve McHenry and a bucket brigade of guests, was put out before the arrival of the fire brigade. Damage to office fittings is estimated at £200. Chairs, a desk, a wireless, a fan and an amplifier system were burnt.Refrigeration plant was put out of action but temporary electrical repairs were made today. Although the office safe was blackened by heat, about £500 and papers inside were not damaged. About 1.20 a.m., a guest saw smoke on the first floor and gave the alarm. In night attire, McHenry and about eight guests attacked the fire with a garden hose and then with buckets of water. Mr. and Mrs. Leeds and Mrs. R. Jensen, of Mullewa, were sleeping in rooms opening on to the front balcony. Mrs. Jensen heard the noise of the fire fighting. She called to the Leeds 'Quick' There's a fire. 'Get out' They hurried from their rooms towards the main stairs and were met by choking smoke. Then they saw flames in the office under the front stairs. We headed for the back stairs, but just as we reached them all the lights went out and we were left in the darkness said Leeds today. Somehow I became separated from my wife. We went back through our room and out on to the balcony. Along Rails There Leeds and Mrs. Jensen found that Mrs. Leeds had clambered along the balcony rail 25ft. above the ground, to get around a verandah partition. 'Mrs. Leeds was trying to climb down one of the verandah posts, said Mrs. Jensen. We called to her not to go, but she didn't hear us. We both saw her lose her grip and fall. She was unconscious when someone got to her downstairs after we had railed for help. Floodlights outside the building were switched on and by their light a doctor attended to Mrs Leeds before she was taken away by ambulance. Her condition today is satisfactory. Cause of the fire has not been established, but the heat appeared to have been concentrated in electrical fittings. ABOVE LEFT, Nedlands Park Hotel licensee Steve McHenry looks in the drawer of his safe which weathered today's early morning fire. In the safe were £500 and papers, and they were untouched. Above right, the dotted line shows the path of the 20ft. fall of Mrs. Frank A. Leeds, who crashed from the balcony to the road In her haste to escape the fire and sustained a broken ankle. Her husband, Port Hedland Road Board secre Frank A. Leeds, is in the picture. Left, Mrs. Leeds pictured in her hospital bed today. ' | Cream, Edith Marion (I66)

462 | 1915 'CONDENSED CORRESPONDENCE THE WHALING INDUSTRY "J.S.D." (Claremont) observes:-Your correspondent "Hugh Kalyptus," when writing about the whaling industry on our coasts omitted to mention 2 whaling stations one at Port Gregory and the other at Malus Island. Port Gregory station was worked by Messrs. J. and W. Bateman's whalers during the "sixties" and the Malus Island station (40 miles from Cossack) was used about 1870. I remember' seeing part of the plant about 1880. In connection with the Port Gregory station, an event occurred which caused some. excitement and much sympathy among the people of Dongarra and Geraldton the loss of a fine crew of whalers when trying to enter Port Dongarra during a nor-west gale. Having to trust to memory for dates, I cannot vouch for them being quite correct, but I think that the catastrophe occurred during August, 1868. Messrs. J, and W. Bateman's smart schooner Twinkling Star left Fremantle witth the intention .of .conveying a crew of whalers to Port Gregory, and of calling en route at Dongarra and Geraldton to discharge cargo. Atter her arrival at Dongarra and during a heavy nor-west gale the Star dragged her anchors, and went ashore and as there was not much chance of re floating her at the time, a message was sent by' horseman, to Geraldton asking for a boat to convey the whaling crew to Port Gregory. For this purpose the Albatross a 20-ton cutter, was dispatched in charge of Mr. A. Pead, a well-known and respected resident of The Bay (by which the name Geraldton was often called by local residents). The Albatross reached Dongarra without mishap, but after setting out on the return journey met with a strong nor- west gale, and after trying in vain to weather Point Moore, eased off, and ran back to Dongarra for shelter. But when she was just at the entrance of the harbour a huge sea struck the little craft, causing her either to founder or to "turn turtle," the result being that the members of the crew were drowned, except Alex. Pead and one of the Lewington's, of Fremantle, who, after a desperate struggle, managed to reach the shore. | Pead, Alfred (I11)

480 | Supposed Drowning Fatality WILLIAM BONE MISSING. From news which has reached us, it appears probable that Mr. W. Bone., son. of Mrs. A. Blaney, of Moonyoonooka has been, drowned in the Greenough River. It seems Bone, who was working at his stepfather s place, about six miles from Eradu, left there on Saturday morning last for Mr. Truslove's. place, on the east side of the Greenough, for their mail, and at the time said that unless a particular letter was there for Mr. Blaney, he would probably ride on down to his mother's place at Moonyoonooka. As Bone did not return, Mr. Blaney naturally came to the conclusion that he had not got the letter, and had carried out his intention of corming to Moonyoonooka. On Tuesday Mr. Blaney having occasion to go to Eradu for some goods he was expecting by rail, started for that place with a cart and two horses, and following the usual track, attempted to cross the river, which was running, at a well known sandy crossing, but on getting into tho Water, found the usual bottom had evidently been washed away and that there was a large deep pool. with the- result that Mr. Blauey had to free the two horses as best he could, in about eight feet of water. Leaving the cart, harness and effects in the river, he got ashore with the horses, and made his way to Trusloes where he was provided with a change of clothes. On finding that Bone had not been there, Mr. Blaney came to the conclusion that Bone, on finding the river running, decided not to cross, and had gone to Moonoonooka. Yesterday, on finding that Bone had not been seen either at Moonoonooka or Geraldton, got the stationmaster at Eradu to notify the police at Geraldton. Today he came into town himself and reported the affair. Constable Walsh has been despatched to search. Much sympathy is expressed for the family in their present anxiety. | Bone, William Arthur (I243)

494 | Board Asks For Goats To Be Made Vermin MULLEWA, Sunday.--On the suggestion of a member, Mr. Bob Jensen, the Mullewa Road Board has decided to request the Vermin Board in Perth to have wild goats declared a vermin in the Mullewa district and that a bonus of 2/6 a head be paid on them Mr. Jensen, who owns Bullardoo station 50 miles north of Mullewa, said that in the last two years he had personally shot 1,000 goats. When going around the wind mills it was not unusual to shoot 50. They were breeding faster than sheep and were eating the best of the feed and fences would not stop them. Their skins averaged about 4/ but this was not sufficient incentive to hunt them.He thought a bonus of 2/6 would make it worth while. Thengapore market for goats had closed. | Jensen, Robert (Bob) Henry (I135)

495 | Research Repository.murdoch.edu.au/ Little is documented of European exploration of the Muggon area. Isolated sections of Muggon were selected as individual leases in the late 1870s and 1880s. The lack of water on Muggon (except in good years) discouraged early settlers from taking up much of the existing lease (Nixon & Lefroy n.d.). In 1907, John Mitchell acquired the Muggon country for his mother’s family firm, L.D. Mitchell & Sons of Yallalong. For the next quarter of a century the area was run as an out camp of Yallalong and cattle were grazed over the area (Nixon & Lefroy n.d.). A stone building and shearing shed were erected near a natural well called ‘Mookin’. Unfortunately, the shearing shed burnt down in 1927. In 1928, John Mitchell built a homestead, outbuilding and a second shearing shed then began an extensive fencing program and endeavoured to obtain better water supplies. Arthur Leeds lived in the homestead and ran the station for the Mitchell family although the property was still considered part of Yallalong (Nixon & Lefroy n.d.). The current shearing shed is unique in its construction in that it is an all-steel shed, prefabricated, that was fully imported from England. The only timber in the shed is that on the floor of the wool room, the shearing board and the pens. The shearer’s quarters and mess were also constructed of steel and have flat slate slabs which are unique to the property. The slate came from a hill called Badgeradda, about 160 kilometres from the homestead (Nixon & Lefroy n.d.). In 1937, John Mitchell died and Arthur Leeds and his family moved to Yalallong leaving the Muggon homestead and area unoccupied and resulted in it being again run from Yallalong on an outstation basis. | Leeds, Arthur (I1133)
