DROVER'S DISASTROUS TRIP.
A telegram from Meekatharra to Perth on Wednesday stated that owing to tho unexpected drying up of what has hitherto been considered permanent pools on the stock route from Roy Hill and the uncompleted condition of the well at the bore near Jibboom Pool.
Drover Miller with 500 head of cattle from Yandayarra station, consigned to Mr. J. P. Meehan, of Day Dawn, met with disaster and only 290 were saved when the drover arrived at Francisco's station, after being 24 hours without water.
It is stated that a well was sunk at the bore and left uncompleted within eight feet o£ -water, and the timber and plant, necessary to complete the well was left on the ground. This would lead one to believe that the disaster had just happened, but as a matter of fact the 290 head of cattle were delivered to Mr Meehan early in last mouth after being on the road since the middle of June.
The drover had to leave some of the on the road as their condition was too low for them to travel and he has since gone back to try and recoup some of his losses. However, this still bears out the fact that the wells along this particular route are in a very bad condition, and, as stated in our last issue, demand the immediate attention of the Water Supply Department officials.
The well commenced near Jibboom Pool was, we believe, stopped over some wages or other trouble with the men, who stopped work and left the job. The Department evidently also stopped work, and the good timber and necesrary plant to carry out the work is allowed to rest on the ground for the white ants.
Drover Miller is not the only one that has met disaster this year one or two others have also had bad luck. The stock follows too quickly one mob on another and the wells are not able to give the amount required in the time. We understand Mr. Nevett, the officer in charge of the Day Dawn Water Supply went to Perth this week and probably he will receive instructions to carry out this necessary work.
Over 10,000 head of stock have travelled over this route this year. A special train on Thursday conveyed a lot of mixed cattle from Nannine to Mullewa where they will be unloaded and driven to Mingenew. Twelve and a half bogie trucks were used to convey the mob, which came from Mr. Lee Steere's Belele Station, and are for Mr. O'Halloran. There is a mob of about 4000 sheep now at Cue awaiting trucks for railing to the coast. The sheep belong to Messrs. Dudbridge and CO. and came down from the Nor West. |
