Waroora Station Western Australia [1] |
Mr. H. O. Lefroy, who returned to town from his Waroora station a few days ago, speaks hopefully of the prospects of his recent purchase. Prospecting for water and fencing is being actively carried on.
So far water has been struck in two places fresh water in one and good stock water in the other, the depth of the holes being from 12 to 15 ft. The stocking up of the station is also being carried out with expedition, 2,000 breeding ewes from Brick House and 2,100 from Globe Hill having been safely delivered at their new home by Drover Fleming. |

LEONORA.
Messrs. Simonds, Roach, Read, and Fleming arrived at Leonora with 5000 sheep. They experienced a most trying time in the early stages of the trip, being 13 weeks on the dry stage, losing 300 sheep and 19 horses. The sheep were for Messrs. Butcher and Uhr from Doorawarra station, on the Gascoyne, 60 miles from Carnarvon.
The journey over the track along the river was very severe, and progress was slow. At Diamond Well the water was poor, necessitating a 40-mile trip. Good water as a result of recent heavy rain on the fields, helped the stock from Lake Way, and, despite the rough time, the stock arrived in excellent condition
They were six months on the trip. One thousand five hundred were trucked to Kalgoorlie. A big price had to be paid for drovers horses to replace those that perished. Fresh water was procured in places by sinking nine or ten feet in the sand.
The river water was very salt, and the drovers experienced great difficulty in keeping the stock well enough to recuperate on the lower country. Three thousand five hundred sheep will be trucked away from Stuart Meadows, Butcher and Uhr's station, 40 miles from Leonora. Stubber and party are bringing 250 head of cattle. They had a bad time of it, but are expected to pick up well when in the rain belt.
All the water holes in the district are filled, and wild fowl of every description are plentiful. Plenty of wild turkeys were procured on the trip, and many of the early inconveniences experienced were forgotten. |
