NORTHAM.
The death of an old and highly esteemed resident in the person of Mr. Richard George Meares, occurred at his residence last week. The deceased was a native of the State, having been born in York in 1849.
After having charge of "Culhanm,"now owned by Mr. J. Phillips, for some years, he managed the property of the late Mr. W. Padbury, at Dandarragan. He came to Northam 30 years ago, entered into business, from which after years of varying success, he ultimately retired.
His wife, who was the youngest daughter of Mr. James Nairn, a well known businessman in the early days of the State, survives him. The late Mr. Meares was one of the earliest members of the Freemasons' Lodge at York.
For some time he had not experienced good health, but he' did not take to his bed until the Saturday night previous to his death. The funeral, which took place to the Anglican portion of the local cemetery, on Thursday, was largely attended.
