Meteorite
THIRTY-SIX YEARS AGO a horse named Meteorite was brought to Perth from Geraldton and burst on to the turf firmament. He was preceded by tales of great galloping ability, and when he raced be proved it. Making the opposition look cheap "first up," he was made a hot favorite for the Railway Stakes, then run over a mile and a Quarter. Slipping away to the front at barrier rise, Meteorite was never headed, but he was only a sprinter and just lasted long enough to win from Homeward Bound. But what a sprinter he was! NOW there is another Geraldton owned horse in Barkis, who, having won in each of the last four starts on metropolitan courses, is in the boom for the Railway Stakes. And he looks like emulating Meteorite. Meteorite was a South Australian bred horse by Thunderbolt, and was raced by J. Cream, for whom he was trained by George Colquohon. Meteorite was originally bought to Geraldton by McKenzie Grant. John bought the horse off him.
