| 1 | The death occurred last night at his residence at Bluff Pt. of Mr. Edgar Major Patten, an old resident of the district. Mr Patten, who was 72 years of age, retired to rest about nine o'clock. He was heard to be breathing heavily, and when someone went to see what was the matter it was found he had passed away. For some time the deceased had been in indifferent health, suffering from an affection of the heart. In the early days Mr. Patten was well known on the Murchison goldfields, carrying on the business of a carrier between Mullewa and the Black Range district. Subsequently he was engaged in farming at Yetna for some years but have this up two or three years ago, and had since lived at Bluff Point. He had a large family, fourteen children altogether. He is survived by his wife, seven daughters, and two sons. There are 43 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. | 3 | A new drover, J. E. Scott, was engaged, who at the time was at Mullewa with Wallal 780 miles away. An early start was made as fully six weeks would be employed in walking his plant to the station. Scott, who was accompanied by his brother-in-law, Paul Devaurno, and others, was reported unwell when he arrived at Mundiwindi. Battling along, Scott and his men arrived at Marble Bar in the third week in May, when Scott was taken seriously ill and died in the Marble Bar hospital on May 24, 1929. More confusion and delay. | 4 | A Northam correspondent writes that on December 30 Mr. John Stephen Monger, son of Mr. John Monger, was married to Miss Helena Mina Waldeck, youngest daughter of Mrs. E. Waldeck, of Northam. The ceremony was performed in the Wesleyan Church, in the presence of a large number of people, by the Rev.T.Finch. The bride wore a pretty costume of - white silk, trimmed with rich silk lace and orange blossoms, her hat being of white tulle, trimmed with a large ostrich feather and plumes. Miss Bertha Monger, who acted as bridesmaid, wore white cashmere trimmed with green silk and ribbon. The bride was given, away by her brother-in-law, Mr. Woolhouse. At the conclusion of the ceremony the party adjourned to the residence of. | 7 | The sad news was received last night of the death of James Wheelock, a well known resident of the district. It appears that the deceased, his wife, and her parents (Mr and Mrs Joseph Fogarty), and deceased's teamster, Mr Sidney Beeson were at Mr Wheelock's homestead about 8O mile from here on Xmas Day. About 7 o'clock in the evening Wheelock went up to Joseph Fogarty with a cup in bis hand and said, " Look what your son in law is, going' to do, there is strychnine in the cup," and he immediately drank it before Mr Fogarty could stop him. He called out to Beeson who was fifty yards away and told him what had happened. Beeson got some emetic ready but it was some time before they could get him to take it thev gave him three or four doses but the poison had got too good a hold on him and after about two hours suffering he died. Beeson made a coffin and had a grave dug and put the body in. He then rode into .Minginew with the sad news. He left for Dongara last night accompanied by Mr C Fogarty, returning by this morning's train. They leave for the scene today, with .Mr S E Moore, JP and PC. Simpson to hold an inquiry. The deceased was 43 years of age and was married a little over t wo years ago to Miss Florence Fogarty, only daughter of Mr Joseph. Fogarty of Matara. Their only child died about 12 months ago. | 11 | , THE TOP OF THt HILL. i Signposts of the-Outback. Dear "Non-Corn."-Most city folk, when travelling bent, have their way plainly marked. Sign-posts or mile pegs mark the way. The bushmen, especially the drovers with sheep and cattle from up north, have their road equally well marked. Although perhaps those "mile-pegs" may bear little significance to the average person, they are quite evident to the drover, telling him of a further stage of his journey over. With the Roebourne Plains falling be-hind after Yarraloola station is passed, it is not many miles before Chullyong Pool is reached. Situated in the Robe River, with one bank a line of cliff-like rocks, this is truly an imposing stretch of water, an ideal watering place for Stock, though quicksand is encountered here occasionally. Prom here the spinifex country stands out in contrast to the rolling Roebourne Plains. From here passing Red Hill a table top hill is seen. It was here that two drovers were caught in a "willy." Jack Mallet, one of the drovers, pushed his sheep on to the table top hill, whilst Bill Clarkson, the other, was unfortunately caught in a water-course between the hills, with the result that Mallet got through with practically no loss, while Clarkson had a considerable number drowned. The stock route winds from here, through portion of Nanutarra, and comes out on the Ashburton, near its, junction with Duck Creek. The Ashburton ls followed for a period, Bullaloo station is passed; and the route leaves the river again, travelling south till the Henry River is reached. It was near here that two well-known drovers had their smash. Several years.ago, Joe Waldeck and Jack Lyons were coming down, only a day or so apart, and struck poison. Out of a mob of 4,000 old Joe lost approximately 1,600 sheep. Jack lost a proportionately large number from his big mob. Not many miles from here, further up the Henry, is where old "Rusty" Fleming got into a fix with one of his native stockmen. Rusty was travelling south With stock at the time, and on one night camp the native "stripped for war," caught Rusty at a disadvantage, belaboured him with his nulla nulla, and ran vanished Into the night. Leaving the Henry, Maroonah is passed, the Lyons River ls reached, crossed and followed, through Minnie Creek, across the Arthur River, past Lyons River station, till finally a few miles below Lyons River wool shed the route leaves the river and crosses a series of small plains. These have proved a death trap to numerous travelling sheep. Poison grows here at certain periods. Crossing the Gascoyne near the 10 mile well, the Dalry Creek is soon reached and followed. Past a small low hill, said to be the site of a native battle in the long ago, past the remains of old Jack Jordan's "Boundary Btore" (haven of many a drover in days gone by), past plant's Well with Its poison patches, till eventually, reaching old Dick Fox's grave (at that time crudely marked with a peg but from a gum-sucker} the stock route leaves the "Dairy" once more, and strikes across the hills and "wanyu" scrub till Belang Pool is reached. Walled in on three sides by high cliffs with the pool itself at the foot of a waterfall and only approachable up the creek bed itself this water.is a boon to the thirsty stock after their dry stage from Plant's Well. It was here that a drover Jack Mallet, I believe) camped one night with a "jumpy" mob from the north. The mob "galloped" during the night, and the night watchman, with the fear crazed cattle tearing through the night, on one side of him, the steep bank of the creek on the other, and rough, broken ground ahead, raced the night horse through the darkness, until he finally blocked the mob only a few short yards from the cliffs, with their drop to the creek bed, some 50ft. below. With Belang behind, the Worramel is crossed at Walarie, and Byro Station is soon reached. There the weary drover curses the fence that keeps his foot-sore stock from the softer ground of the creek bed, and forces them to travel for miles over low stoney hills. Here also is where Atkinson had his smash. With his cattle stringing in the daylight gloom, he was greeted with the sight of about 40 of his beasts lying dead on camp. This was not his total loss either. These are the drovers' "mile-pegs." As they battle down from the far north, past stock-route wells, with their long lengths of troughing, and upthrust whip-ping gear, across dry rivers, with their banks lined with gum trees, over erratic-ally meandering cattle pads ("sign-posts" of the water nearby) they are spread over hundreds of miles of country, slowly changing as the mobs string by, until eventually, they fade away where the last tired bullock, or last ragged sheep ls finally prodded up some trucking race, or counted over to an agent or buyer. . They are always there, grim reminders bf the trials ahead, as they bridge the miles and mark the way on the stock routes outback. SHORTHORN, Meekatharra. | Mallet, Jack (I341)

In association with Barney Crampton and Nick Kirwin, deceased discovered and worked a P. A. at Mt. Eureka from which the partners obtained high results. | 14 | 4 November 1927 Police Court Wiluna Drover Charged. At the Wiluna Police Court Oct 28th, before Messrs H. J. Urquhart and A. Paterson J.P, P.Kilmurray was changed with committing a breach ot the Drovers Act 1902 by travelling stock on Lake Way station without first giving the necessary notice. The manager H. J. Lukin appeared on behalf of the station owners. The defendant pleaded guilty and was fined £1/0/0 with £4/2/6 costs. | 16 | COUNTRY LETTERS It is with regret that I have to report another accident,which resulted in the death of a farmer named David Blaney. From what I can ascertain by enquiry it appears that Blaney, in company with several friends, was returning home last evening from the shows, when, on nearing Mr. Maley's cross road, Blaney 's horse shied suddenly at something lying on the roadside and galloped up to the road toward Mr. Maley's house. Blaney was thrown to the ground with much violence,landing on his head, which killed him instantly, Blaney leaves a wife and seven or eight children to mourn his sudden loss. Rogers (son-in-law), Misses Mabel, Edith, and Ada Thorp (grand-daughters), Henry, Arnold, Hubert, Charles, Frederick, and Clarence Thorp (grandsons), Misses Florrie, Clara, Violet, and Muriel Bergin (granddaughters), Albert, Jack, and Malcolm Bergin (grandsons). | 38 | 1913 'Family Notices The funeral of the late Mr. Robert Charles Whitehurst, late of Mullewa and Geraldton, took place on Sunday afternoon last in the Roman Catholic portion of the Karrakatta Cemetery, and was largely attended. | 39 | 1913 'COUNTRY NORTHAM. The death of an old and highly esteemed resident in the person of Mr. Richard George Meares, occurred at his residence last week. The deceased was a native of the State, having been born in York in 1849. After having charge of "Culhanm,"now owned by Mr. J. Phillips, for some years, he managed the property of the late Mr. W. Padbury, at Dandarragan. He came to Northam 30 years ago, entered into business, from which after years of varying success, he ultimately retired. His wife, who was the youngest daughter of Mr. James Nairn, a well known businessman in the early days of the State, survives him. The late Mr. Meares was one of the earliest members of the Freemasons' Lodge at York. For some time he had not experienced good health, but he' did not take to his bed until the Saturday night previous to his death. The funeral, which took place to the Anglican portion of the local cemetery, on Thursday, was largely attended. The chief mourners were Mr. S. G. Meares(son), Messrs. G. and W. Meares (brothers), and Mr. Samuel Viveash (brother-in-law). The pall-bearers were, Messrs. C. Kelso, A. Grose, D. T. Morrell, Jas. Morrell, W. J.
